Part-time National Senior Certificate (NSC):

The Part-time National Senior Certificate (NSC) pathway is tailored for individuals who have either failed their matric exams, want to improve their results, or never had the chance to complete Grade 12. Learners under the age of 21, who left Grade 12 less than three years ago, are eligible. Our program allows participants to attend classes during the week until they are ready to write their exams.

Part-time and Full-time Senior Certificate (SC):

The Part-time and Full-time Senior Certificate (SC) is designed for candidates aged 21 and older. This pathway caters to those who completed Grade 9 but left school before Grade 12 exams, as well as those who wrote their matric exams more than three years ago. SC candidates receive institutional support through our Howick Academic Educational Centre, ensuring a structured approach to their matric qualification.

Senior Certificate (SC) Grade 9-12 Dropout

Programme:

The Senior Certificate (SC) Grade 9-12 Dropout Programme is a groundbreaking initiative scheduled to roll out in January 2022. This program awards a qualification for completing Grade 9, providing a nationally recognized certificate for those who did not reach Grade 12. By offering an alternative pathway to further education and training, this programme aims to improve the prospects of young people who left school before obtaining any national certification.

Costs and Accessibility

Financial Considerations:

Pursuing matric 'on the fringe' requires financial resources, including registration fees, transport to and from classes, learning materials, data, tuition fees, and certification fees. Costs vary depending on the educational institutions attended. At the Howick Academic Educational Centre, we are committed to affordability, ensuring that learners have minimal costs, making it easier for them to access second chance opportunities.

Job Opportunities:

Our programme not only opens doors to education but also creates job opportunities for unemployed youth in Howick. By offering non-permanent contract positions to full-time teachers, we ensure that experienced educators can contribute to our mission while earning additional income.

Partnership and Support

DBE Partnership:

We are proud to partner with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) in our mission to provide second chance education. Since 2020, HAEC has received valuable resources, including textbooks and study materials, through our partnership with the DBE. The local DBE office has also provided mobile resources to facilitate registration, reducing the transport costs for our candidates.

Other Stakeholders:

Our efforts are further bolstered by the support of various stakeholders who believe in the power of second chance education. These stakeholders, whether local businesses, community leaders, or educational experts, contribute to our programme's growth and success. We appreciate the ongoing collaboration that helps us create more opportunities for second chance learners.

Role of the Educational Centre

Central Hub for Information and

Assistance:

The Howick Academic Educational Centre serves as a central hub for individuals pursuing second chance opportunities. We are committed to providing comprehensive information about second chance eligibility, registration, preparation, and certification. Our center is designed to be a one-stop-shop, enabling learners to register for a second chance pathway, access necessary information, obtain preparation materials, and collect their certificates efficiently.

Structured Support and Mentorship:

We understand that pursuing matric 'on the fringe' can be a challenging journey. At HAEC, we offer structured support and mentorship to guide learners through the process. Our dedicated team ensures that each individual receives the necessary assistance, whether it's navigating second chance information, registering for a pathway, finding preparation materials, or preparing for examinations. We believe that having a supportive environment significantly contributes to the success of second chance learners.

Online Resources and Services

DBE E-Services:

TThe Department of Basic Education (DBE) offers valuable e-services for matric learners through www.eservices.gov.za. These services enable young people to reissue their matric certificates, register for a second chance matric, check their exam results, or request paper remarks. While these e-services provide essential functionalities, we understand that learners may need additional support in navigating and accessing these resources.

Centralized Educational Centre:

Recognizing the challenges in accessing and utilizing online resources, the Howick Academic Educational Centre acts as a centralized educational hub. We offer a one-stop-shop environment where learners can access information, assistance, and preparation materials seamlessly. Our center is surrounded by educational experts who provide guidance and support, making it easier for students to prepare for their matric exams.

Collaboration with DBE:

Since our partnership initiation with the DBE in 2020, the Howick Academic Educational Centre has received textbooks and study materials to enhance our tutoring program. The local DBE office has also provided mobile resources, aiming to reduce transport costs for candidates. Additionally, we aim to make video learning accessible, understanding that data costs can be a barrier for some students.
